22 Mysteries of the Christian WayThe Arcana are the mysteries, the riddles of life that man has to solve in order to find contact with God. The Apostolic Church has inherited the basic forms according to the tradition of the Old Testament; but the actual content relates to the word of God; from the New Testament. As Saint John the Forerunner says: 'For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.' (John, 1,17).
This can be observed in the seven-headed candlestick of the altar, in the manner in which the holy fathers interpreted the psalms of the king and the prophet David, and the other habits of the Christian tradition. This work of co-creation with God was begun by the Apostles and was continued by the holy fathers who have created the liturgies, prayer services, chants and exercises of inner prayer. All the mentioned forms contribute to the richness of the Christian tradition, and especially the Russian Orthodox tradition, which descends directly from the Byzantium tradition.
This book attempts, in the spirit of the creative work of the holy fathers, to re-fill the Major Arcana of Tarot with a new content: the mysteries of the New Testament, given to us by Christ. It is a presentation of the Royal Path of finding God inside the soul, which was accomplished by thousands and thousands Christian monks and ascetics, who left to us a record of their spiritual experiences. Their instructions form the basis of this book.
The first four Arcana are contemplative mysteries, as they explain where the Path starts and where it leads to. The other eighteen Arcana are the active mysteries, as they explain how man can purify and elevate his or her soul. The path to heaven is made up of the 22 steps of the ladder.
Studying each Arcanum and mastering the practices of prayer and contemplation, enables you to climb one step higher. These prayer and contemplation practices purify and elevate the soul and prepare the soul to become a temple of God. The symbol of the ladder signifies the process of the growth of the Christian virtues in the soul of the practitioner, until he or she becomes worthy of the Heavenly Kingdom and is able to enter into it. |
