Notre Dame is the story of a Renoir painting stolen from a Jewish family by the Nazis in 1944. Just before the liberation of Paris, the painting is hidden in Notre Dame Cathedral by a young SS officer, Heiner, and a French collaborator, Favier. But Heiner is double-crossed and he sets off in pursuit of Favier and his girlfriend, Bird.

The story moves between 1944 and 2004, when the painting comes up for auction and then disappears again. Now the hunt for the painting is joined by James Bartholomew, working for an organisation trying to return stolen art to Jewish families, and Favier's son, Marcel, who, like Heiner, will stop at nothing to gain possession of the prize.
